Re:         New DSIC Board of Directors Nominations Process

The Downtown Schenectady Improvement Corporation (DSIC) has recently adopted a new Board of Directors nominations process. Through this process, the DSIC is looking to identify a pool of talented individuals who will dedicate their time and resources to the success and sustainability of our organization.

The DSIC's mission is to promote Downtown Schenectady as a premier location for commerce, recreation and residence by enhancing, facilitating and supporting economic and cultural growth. We accomplish this through outdoor cleaning & maintenance, visual improvements, special events, promotions, advertising, business recruitment & retention and more. Further details are available online at http://www.downtownschenectady.com/.

A portion of the DSIC's annual operating budget comes from fees paid by property owners located within the Downtown Special Assessment District (DSAD) - a list of DSAD street addresses is available below. The DSIC is governed by a nine (9) member Board of Directors, seven (7) of whom must be DSAD property owners or their agents. All board members are appointed by the Mayor of Schenectady and approved by the Schenectady City Council. This new process was created to identify a strong and representative slate of candidates to present to the Mayor and City Council for their consideration when selecting and approving board appointments.

Seven (7) seats on the DSIC Board of Directors are up for appointment in 2010, at least six (6) of which must be DSAD property owners or their agents. The remaining seat may be held by a non-property owner with interests in the district. The new nominations process is twofold:

  • A Nominating Committee selected by the DSIC Executive Committee will identify one (1) or two (2) potential candidates for each expiring seat or vacancy.
  • Property and/or business owners within the DSAD may nominate themselves for a potential board appointment by submitting:
    • A current resume;
    • A cover letter describing why he or she would like to serve on the DSIC Board;
    • A self-nomination form, including fifteen (15) signatures of downtown property owners, businesses or other downtown stakeholders in support of the nomination.

If you would like to recommend one or more individuals to be considered by the Nominating Committee for potential board service, please contact me at 518-377-9430 or jim@downtownschenectady.com. A list of basic and individual board responsibilities is available below for your reference.

If you would like to nominate yourself for a board position, please print out and complete the form available below and return it along with your resume and cover letter to: DSIC Board Nominations, Attn: Jim Salengo, 143 State Street, Schenectady, NY 12305. All self nominations that meet the requirements above will be forwarded to the Mayor along with the approved list of names generated by the Nominating Committee.

All recommendations and self nominations must be received by Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.

Please feel free to share this information with other downtown stakeholders who may be interested. Contact me at the phone number or email address listed above with any questions.

Sincerely,

James J. Salengo
Executive Director
